Sesame seedsAn important cash cropOriginally grown in tropical Africa, sesame has a long history of cultivation, making it one of the first seeds yielding edible oil. The plant is now grown in Asia, which has become the biggest user of the seed crop. Only a small proportion is consumed in Africa, where sesame is seen to be an excellent revenue stream for farmers with a high return for a minimal level of capital investment. Sesame seeds have a high oil content (+50%) producing high-quality edible oil and are also commercialised for use in food products as well as in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry. Burkina Faso is one of leading West African sesame seed producing countries and buyers are eager to buy the natural, pesticide-free and oil-rich seeds so renowned for their quality. Sesame production needs no added fertilizers or nutrients; the plant is a natural parasite repellent and is often intercropped with other grains such as corn. We have set up a cleaning plant in a dedicated warehouse at Bobo-Dioulasso, run by our Swiss subsidiary Mambo Suisse. The sesame plant uses a straight-forward cleaning procedure, without harmful chemicals, giving a packed product that meets with the required quality levels and guaranteeing its use in the food industry. |
